Us in Sync

2024

Us in Sync is a sound-driven generative moving image research project that examines temporal entrainment and cross-scale coupling between biological and geophysical systems.

Scales

Lunar gravitational cycles generate predictable tidal oscillations; coral reproductive events exhibit phase-locked synchronization with lunar light and temperature conditions; human respiratory and circadian rhythms undergo continuous modulation in response to environmental light exposure and atmospheric variation.
These systems operate at different scales, but they share a common mechanism: internal rhythms respond to recurring external cycles.

Sound as a temporal data

Using TouchDesigner, I developed a real-time generative system in which acoustic signals — including amplitude modulation, frequency distribution, and rhythmic periodicity — are analyzed and mapped to visual variables such as particle aggregation and dispersion, velocity fields, spatial expansion and contraction.

Human respiration and tidal motion are approached as systems shaped by larger environmental cycles. Rhythm becomes the condition through which living systems adjust and stay aligned with their environment.
